Project Overview
This backyard makeover combines a low-maintenance artificial turf lawn with a wire trellis system planted in Star Jasmine (Trachelospermum jasminoides). The goal was to turn a narrow side yard into a clean, usable green space while softening the fence line with a fragrant, evergreen screen. The result is a modern, kid- and pet-friendly surface with seasonal blooms climbing the fence for privacy and texture.
Why Artificial Turf Here
The space receives mixed sun and shade and has limited access for mowing equipment. Natural grass struggled with compaction and drainage, leaving thin patches and mud after rain. Quality synthetic turf solves those issues:
- Always green, year-round—no muddy areas or bare spots.
- Low maintenance—no mowing, fertilizing, or irrigation needed beyond an occasional rinse.
- Durable and level—great for pets, kids, outdoor furniture, or a small putting net.
- Clean edges—the crisp border along the patio visually enlarges the yard and keeps debris off hardscape.
Our Installation Process
- Assessment & Layout – We mapped sun patterns, downspouts, and walkway clearances, then designed turf seams and trellis spacing to look balanced from the main windows.
- Base Prep – Existing vegetation was removed and the area graded for a gentle, consistent fall away from the house. We installed a compacted base of road base/aggregate to create a firm foundation and assist drainage.
- Turf Placement – Premium turf rolls were aligned to keep the grain (pile direction) consistent across the yard. Seams were cut precisely and joined with commercial adhesive and seam tape to remain invisible from normal viewing angles.
- Perimeter Securing – Turf edges were pinned and tucked for clean lines along the patio and fence. Infill was brushed in to support the blades, weigh down the surface, and help with cooling.
- Final Groom – We power-broomed the turf to lift the pile and checked walking comfort and surface level from door thresholds to fence.
Wire Trellis with Star Jasmine
To soften the fence and add a vertical garden element, we installed a stainless-steel wire trellis system and planted Star Jasmine along the base. This vine is evergreen in our climate, tolerant of sun/partial shade, and produces white, highly fragrant flowers in late spring and early summer.
Benefits of this trellis system:
- Slim profile—perfect for narrow side yards.
- Air circulation—wires hold the vine slightly off the fence to reduce mildew and staining.
- Easy training—as new growth appears, it’s clipped to the wires for an orderly, diamond-patterned green wall.
- Durability—stainless hardware resists rust; wires can be tightened as plants mature.
Planting details: We amended the soil along the fence line, placed plants at even intervals, and added a drip line to each root zone. A rock or mulch strip was installed between the bed and turf to keep soil off the synthetic surface.
Care & Maintenance
- Turf – Rinse occasionally to freshen. Brush against the grain if a high-traffic zone begins to mat. For pets, use a hose rinse; enzymatic cleaner can be used if needed. Keep leaf blowers on low to avoid moving infill.
- Jasmine – Water deeply the first season while roots establish. Lightly prune after flowering to keep a uniform grid and protect windows and lighting. Check ties every few months and train new shoots onto the wires.

- Star Jasmine (1–3 gallon) spaced to fill in within 1–2 growing seasons
- Drip irrigation line with pressure regulator and filter (where requested)
Timeline
Most projects of this size install in 2–3 days, depending on access, weather, and the length of fence requiring trellis hardware. We schedule final grooming and a walkthrough on the last day to review care and answer questions.
