For this residential yard in Magnolia, TX, we refreshed an underused area beneath mature pines by building a stone-edged circular flower bed with clean lines and long-lasting materials. The result is a defined, low-maintenance feature that frames the trees and adds color throughout the season.

  • Exposed roots and uneven soil under mature trees
  • Edges blending into the lawn; frequent mulch wash-out
  • Client wanted a natural look that’s easy to maintain and complements the wooded setting
  • Natural Stone Edging: Hand-set moss/field stone to establish a durable border that holds mulch and defines the bed.
  • Bed Prep: Shaped the footprint, leveled low spots, and added soil amendments suitable for shade/filtered sun.
  • Mulch & Planting: Installed premium mulch and shade-tolerant flowering plants for seasonal color; spaced to allow growth.
  • Focal Feature: Center birdbath/sitting accent to draw the eye and invite wildlife.
  • Clean Finish: Crisp transitions to turf with hand-cut edges for a professional, tidy appearance.

Natural stone (moss/field stone) • Premium hardwood mulch • Shade-friendly perennials/annuals • Soil amendments • Birdbath/accent

  • Strong visual definition with a border that resists wash-out
  • Healthier plants in improved soil under filtered light
  • A polished garden room that matches the property’s natural aesthetic
  • Top up mulch once per year to 2–3″ depth
  • Deep-water plants during extended dry spells under pines
  • Light seasonal pruning/deadheading to keep blooms coming

Will stone edging shift over time?
Properly seated stones hold well; we can reset individual pieces if heavy roots move them in future seasons.

What plants do well under pine trees?
We select shade/part-shade varieties that tolerate root competition and acidic soils—your plan is tailored to your site.

Does the bed help with erosion?
Yes—the edging and mulch reduce surface erosion and keep soil/mulch from washing into the lawn.

Can you add lighting or a path later?
Absolutely—low-voltage lighting and a flagstone or DG path can be added without rebuilding the bed.

We design and build landscaping, hardscapes, grading, and drainage across North Houston, Magnolia, The Woodlands, Tomball, Spring, Cypress, and Conroe.
